Nokia Beacon Series
Nokia Wi-Fi Beacon 1
Responsibilities and Challenges
On this project I was the only industrial designer working on it - under close supervision and support by the Nokia Design Director. Because of the fact that the Nokia Design team is very small these days, I had to take over responsibility for the entire process and take over task, that go far beyond industrial design.
I was responsible for ideation, CAD, working out proposals for the mechanical engineering, supporting the mechanical engineering team in Shanghai on finalizing mechanical design, visiting the vendor in Shanghai / China in the tooling phase and going through the process of tooling approval together with R&D and the vendor.
The biggest challenge in this project was the phase of optimizing the design for a good thermal performance (preventing the device from overheating on component level, as well as the outside touch surfaces). I was working close with the thermal engineer and had to iterate the design several times by analyzing the air flow simulations and diagrams I was provided with.
I also was responsible for the packaging design of the 1-pack, 2-pack and 3-pack of the Beacon 1. Therefore I had to work with the packaging vendors in China to achieve the best quality for the lowest price possible (as Beacon 1 is placed in the low price segment.)
A part of the packaging design was to work out the the Quick Start Guide / User manual for this device.
As a final step in this project, I was responsible for the Art Direction together with a co-worker of mine (3D - artist and photographer) for marketing content / lifestyle photography. I was taking care of the shooting location, location styling, styling and photo editing.
Designed for Performance
In real time, the Beacon will circumvent neighboring Wi-Fi and non Wi-Fi interferences by steering your network to the best channel.
No more deadspots
The Beacons form a flexible mesh system to provide seamless Wi-Fi coverage. It’s possible to use up to 3 Beacons to fit the users home size.
Nokia Wi-Fi App and Home Portal
The Nokia Wi-Fi App enables a quick set-up to get you up and running and it allows you to easily manage devices and share your network.
The Home Portal visualizes everything from your network topology, to interference sources impacting your network, to live traffic consumption on each device.
Ideation on vent solution to provide best airflow properties.
